BRAND HISTORY

Canon Inc. is a multinational corporation based in Ōta, Tokyo, Japan. The company specializes in producing optical, imaging, and industrial products, including cameras, lenses, medical equipment, printers, scanners, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Canon is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and is a component of the TOPIX Core 30 and Nikkei 225 indexes. Previously, it also had a secondary New York Stock Exchange listing.

Canon, known initially as Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory, was founded in Japan in 1933 by Takeshi Mitarai, Goro Yoshida, Saburo Uchida, and Takeo Maeda. It began as a company without the capability to produce its optical glass, so it incorporated lenses from Nikon Corporation in its cameras.

In the early years, Canon developed a prototype of Japan's first 35mm focal-plane-shutter camera called 'The Kwanon,' inspired by the Leica design. They also introduced the first indirect X-ray camera in Japan in 1940. Over the years, Canon continued to innovate, launching products such as field zoom lenses for television broadcasting, reflex zoom cameras, and rangefinder cameras.

In 1971, Canon introduced the high-end SLR camera Canon F-1 and the FD lens range. They also introduced the world's first camera with an embedded micro-computer, the Canon AE-1, in 1976.

Canon made significant advancements in the printing industry as well. In 1985, they introduced an inkjet printer using bubble-jet technology. In 1987, they launched the Canon Electro-Optical System (EOS) and the autofocus SLR camera Canon EOS 650.

Throughout the 1990s, Canon continued to innovate by introducing the Canon EOS 5, the first camera with eye-controlled autofocus, and their first digital camera, the PowerShot 600. They also introduced the first commercially available SLR lens with internal image stabilization. In recent years, Canon expanded its product lineup to include projectors, high-definition camcorders, and office solutions, with the acquisition of Tereck Office Solutions in 2010. They also made strategic acquisitions in the surveillance software and security camera markets.

Canon faced challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, recording its first quarterly loss in July 2020. However, they continued to pursue technological advancements, introducing new nanoimprint lithography manufacturing systems in 2023.
